Batter Up

This blog started 5 years ago with one entry. Then it ceased until today. Here's the original:

The Season OpenerI like to rant. When something pisses me off, I want to let people know about it. Some may think I'm a curmudgeon; I think I'm just an ordinary average guy who views the world without blinders.George Bush pisses me off. I'll bet there are countless old prep school and Yale classmates of Bush who, when they get together, snicker, "Do you believe that dumb bastard is President? We used to have to give him all the answers on the history exams!" Or how about his National Guard buddies who covered his ass when he skipped drills. "Hey, can you believe that asshole is Commander-in-chief? We couldn't even get him to show up. I almost barfed when I saw him in a flight suit on that carrier."Bush's tax cut pisses me off. Not that I oppose tax cuts, just his. He gives people a tax cut, then sits idly as the oil companies gouge drivers with huge price increases, conveniently just before Labor Day. So how much of our tax cut is going into the oil companies' pockets? And because the feds aren't passing enough money down to the states, every fee I pay has increased tremendously. $10 for a beach permit instead of $5, huge increases in my teaching load because of layoffs, tuition and fees hikes at colleges. Are people that stupid that they don't see the connection?Iraq pisses me off. Thank God that none of my kids are over there. What a waste! Yeah, I think we did the right thing going in there, but we could have done it more diplomatically, and we certainly could have prepared better for the aftermath. This is Vietnam redux now. Bush looked like a deer in headlights in his speech last night. Just wait, all his "handlers" will let him be hung out to dry when it all comes tumbling down. He looks like an idiot going to the U.N. after all his "Bring 'em on" bravado.Yasser Arafat pisses me off. Why is he still around? We're after Saddam and bin Laden, but Arafat is under our nose and no one does anything. He should, at the least, be bunking at Qaddafi's house with no phone or internet access. Would things be worse in the Mideast if he were gone? So why is he still there? Get rid of the bastard! And while we're at it, get rid of Hamas and Hezbollah, too. And get the Jews out of Gaza and the West Bank. They're all idiots. So there, I feel better already! Pax vobiscum
.

As you can tell, I was teaching at the time, high school English. Now I'm into my 4th year of retirement. Looking back on that original entry, I don't see anything that I would change. Some things have remained the same: Bush is still an asshole, the oil companies are still gouging all of us, the Mideast is still a mess, Bin Laden is still alive. The only difference is that Arafat is dead. So much for the advancement of civilization.
